2019 Dearborn Comics Workshop

JAN. 12 - MARCH 2, 2019

In early 2019 we held a free 8-week comics workshop for local Detroit/Dearborn area participants, providing an intensive theoretical and hands-on learning experience about comics via lectures, demos, exercises, studio time and feedback sessions as participants created their own 8-16 page comics zines. The seven artists then had the opportunity to share and sell their work at the Arab American National Museum’s 2nd annual Book + Print Fest in the Spring.

The workshop was completely free, with each participant receiving a $100 print and production stipend. In addition, one artist was selected as a RAWI fellow, receiving a $250 grant to produce her work.

Workshop sessions were led by Maamoul Press co-founders Leila Abdelrazaq and Aya Krisht, in partnership with the Arab American National Museum (AANM), for three hours every Saturday morning at the Dearborn City Hall Artspace Lofts as part of Leila Abdelrazaq’s artist residency at the lofts with AANM. Participants had access to open studio time on Saturdays following the workshop, as well as to Leila and Aya’s comics and zine library, which was housed there.
