Ghassan Kanafani Linocut/Offset poster

A Jamaa Al-Yad project

Poster of Ghassan Kanafani commemorating the anniversary of his assassination, originally created in 2012 as an A3 black and white linocut print. It was later reproduced as the 2-color offset print seen here by Justseeds Collective, as part of their Celebrate People’s History series. Printed at the worker-owned Stumptown Printers, Portland, OR.

The poster focused on the efforts of Kanafani’s cultural foundation, in this case, a kindergarden in Gaza. It is paired with a quote from Kanafani, written in square Kufic Arabic —“With blood we write for Palestine”— summing up his commitment as well as the passing down of this to future generations.

A bilingual caption on the poster reads:

Ghassan Kanafani (1936–1972) worked as a journalist, a literary critic, and as a fiction writer. He was a spokesman for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and wrote extensively on the Palestinian struggle. With Anni Høver, much of his effort focused on the rights of children and education. He was assassinated in Beirut in 1972.

A few of the remaining original linocut prints are also available here.
