HOLDING OLIVES: Preserving Culture in Times of War
by Christina Hajjar$15
PROCEEDS SUPPORT LEBANON MUTUAL AID EFFORTS
Holding Olives combines personal essay, art writing, and environmental journalism to explore how ecocide is impacting food culture in South Lebanon.
Interviews with analogue photographer Zeinab Mahfoud and filmmaker/journalist Angie Mrad explore the relationship between art and archiving, food and sovereignty, memory and ritual, displacement and occupation.
The text brings together reflections on the photo series Granddaughter of the Olive Tree and short film Shifting Roots with agricultural research to present the cultural preservation of the olive harvest as an act of defiance—both by performing it and documenting it.
