Open Call: Graphic Novel Proposals
SUBMISSIONS NOW CLOSED!
Maamoul Press is seeking proposals for 30-50 page original graphic novels from metro Detroit artists who have never been published professionally before. One winning proposal will be selected and the artist will have their book funded and published by Maamoul Press.
The artist will also be invited to complete a three-week artist residency in November 2019, hosted by the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, to work on the book. The artist will receive a living stipend and free housing in the Dearborn City Hall Artspace Lofts during the residency period, and will have the opportunity to meet with local artists while receiving support and feedback from Maamoul Press comics artists.
All artists from the Detroit metro area are welcome to submit. We especially encourage artists of color, artists from marginalized backgrounds and self-taught artists to apply.
There is no theme, but the work should fall in line with Maamoul Press’s mission of supporting storytelling by, for, and about the artist’s own community.
To apply, please email the following materials to hello@maamoulpress.com no later than Sept. 15, 2019:
- CV of previous work/relevant experience
- 150-300 word synopsis of the proposed work. Please tell us why the story you are telling is important to your community specifically, and why its themes need to be addressed now.
- Sample script (2-5 pages)
- 3 completed (fully illustrated) sample pages from the proposed work
