Help sustain our work in 2021!
Maamoul Press was founded in 2019 by a handful of independent artists, illustrators, and zine-makers with a vision of fostering storytelling for and by our own communities. As artists with identities traditionally marginalized in the comics and book arts communities that we were a part of, we were frustrated with the lack of representation we saw in those spaces, and wanted to make a change.
Since that time, we’ve worked to support artists like us—those using self-publishing to write our own histories, analyze our present realities, and imagine our collective futures.
Today, we’re asking that you help sustain this work with a donation to Maamoul Press!
Freelancers and independent artists have been some of the hardest-hit by COVID-19, and Maamoul Press works to support some of the most marginalized of these individuals. As a not-for-profit press run by volunteer artists, the majority of our revenue goes directly back to the artists we work with. And the bulk of our sales happen at in-person art book and comics festivals, which have come to a halt during the pandemic. This has greatly reduced our capacity both to support the artists we work with, and to sustain our programming and other operations.
Still, this year, we’ve persisted. Generous supporters have continued to purchase the work of Maamoul Press artists online. We’ve participated in a few virtual festivals. And we are currently on track to publish our debut graphic novel, Lukumi by Michigan-based artist Maya James, in Spring 2021!
We don’t know how long this will go on for or when it will be safe to have in-person comics shows again. We are anticipating that for the better part of next year, in-person shows still will not be possible.
In this uncertain landscape, your generosity will keep us going, and will provide us with much-needed capital to complete our first major publishing project.
Thanks to a partnership with our new fiscal sponsor, Allied Media Projects, all donations will be 100% tax-deductible!
Any amount helps tremendously. Please donate today so we can keep going, with your support.
