LUKUMI by Maya James

We are excited to announce the selected artist and graphic novel project from our Fall open call for proposals: Maya James (pictured), author and artist of the forthcoming LUKUMI, which will mark the first graphic novel published by Maamoul Press! Made possible in part by the Knight Foundation and Culture Source. 



LUKUMI: A Story for My Father is a graphic novel that follows the relationships between black women, their environment, their history, their ancestry, and Afro-Atlantic faith. It follows the relationship between Aida and Clarisse, two best friends of different backgrounds who lose each other before a tragedy which changes Aida's life forever. A book for black women, by a black woman.
